FAQs
How do we get started?
Using the portal or email (ryan<at>words-and-advice.com), contact me to schedule a preliminary consult meeting. Here, I will gather as much information about the project as possible and determine if it is a good fit. These meetings are virtual and usually last 45 minutes. After the meeting, a cost estimate will be provided based on the expected turnaround time and type of service being provided. If everything looks good, I send a contract and we will get going!
What do you mean by good fit?
So many things. Do I have time to dedicate to this project? Is it in my wheelhouse of expertise? Are we on the same page regarding timelines and outcomes? For a collaboration to be successful everything has to align so I want to ensure we are set up for success.
What are your rates?
My rates are per hour based on services. After a preliminary consult meeting, I will provide a cost estimate.
What is your turnaround time?
This is highly project dependent. For basic proofreading 5 business days is average. Writing projects and work requiring extensive development or edits will require more attention, effort, and time. I am highly communicative so you can expect updates on my progress.
Do you offer rush services?
Time is at a premium for everyone, so I rarely accept requests for rush service. This means that no is the rule but there may be an exception here and there. Rush service is defined as anything requested with less than a 5-business day turnaround time. Rush service will result in a surcharge of the original fee, depending on the request and circumstance. I will always inform you of any surcharge beforehand, so there will be no surprises.
Will my work be kept confidential?
Absolutely. Your information and your document are treated with complete confidentiality. I will never share your contact information, writing, or data with anyone. Any collaborators that should be granted access to the project must be named in writing before the project begins. All details regarding privacy can be found in the contract and can be discussed prior to signing.
Do you guarantee publication/funding?
I cannot guarantee publication of edited manuscripts, nor can I guarantee funding of submitted grant applications. Accepting manuscripts or funding grant applications rests solely with the journal or the funding agency, respectively. What I can do is provide constructive feedback and insightful directives to help build a final product that you are proud to submit.
Do you work with students?
It depends on the context. I will not touch any coursework, but I will help develop and critique professional items (Cover letter, CV, research statements) for job applications or fellowships. Additionally, if a student is the first author of a manuscript, I will provide manuscript services pending approval from the PI.
